As the days get shorter and the water temperatures cool down the bite gets better. Lewis and Clark lake is a great destination to target big walleye in the fall. And those walleyes are slowly migrating to the east end of the lake to the deeper water where the fall bite gets good in mid to late October. Looks for schools of bait fish as well as white bass as that is what the walleye's are feeding on. You can find these schools of walleye in the 20-35' foot depths and when it gets colder even as deep at 40' fow. From Wiegand to Walkers is also a good spot as well as along the South Dakota side from the Marina to Gavins boat ramp in front of the beaches. Walleye like the sand transitions in the fall for the shallow water bite in the evening or if the wind is blowing out of the south don't be afraid to get up shallower near the beaches on the SD side. Trolling lead core line with bigger baits like a Northland Rumble shad #9 or Salmo Free Diver #9 and Flicker Minnows/Shads in #9 and up will work great. But nothing beats a jig and minnow or creek chub when the conditions are right. Don't be afraid to go out in cruddy conditions as that is when the bite can be at it's best. Dropping water temps trigger these walleye to feed if you can care the elements.
